University of North Carolina System President Margaret Spellings says she will resign on March 1, 2019.
The announcement comes following an emergency meeting held by the system Board of Governors and a divisive three-year tenure by Spellings that saw protests over the university’s attempts to enforce North Carolina’s transgender bathroom law, as well as the ‘Silent Sam’ Confederate statue at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The Board of Governors expects to appoint an interim replacement in the coming weeks.
