As the start of the 2020 political campaigns nears, newsrooms across the country are gearing up for what is certain to be a hectic reporting cycle. Some political and campaign editors are shifting reporters from previous assignments to the campaign beat and others are on a hiring spree.
Here’s a peek at what we have tracked inside Leadership Connect:
The New York Times
Patrick Healy was named politics editor in March of this year, charged with putting together a campaign team to cover the midterms and the 2020 election. A longtime Times reporter, he most recently served as deputy editor for news at the culture desk.
The Washington Post
Cathleen Decker, a former political editor and columnist at the Los Angeles Times, joined in May as campaign editor.
Annie Linskey, a Boston Globe national political reporter, was hired in November as national political reporter focused on the 2020 election.
Matt Viser, the deputy bureau chief in Washington, DC for the Boston Globe, joined in October to cover the presidential campaigns.
Chelsea Janes, who has covered sports for the Post, was assigned to the presidential campaigns beat this month, along with Sean Sullivan, who previously reported for the congressional team.
The Wall Street Journal
Ken Thomas, a veteran AP reporter and editor, was named politics reporter by the WSJ in November to cover the election.
Politico
Natasha Korecki, after reporting on Illinois State politics since 2015, was assigned to the election beat as national political correspondent.
Holly Otterbein, most recently a political reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer, joined Politico as national political reporter this month.
David Siders shifted from reporting about California state politics to campaign coverage.
Alex Thompson, former Vice News politics and policy editor, was hired as national political reporter in September.
Elena Schneider who covered the Midterm elections joined Politico’s presidential election team in November.
CNN
Kyle Blaine, senior editor on the KFILE investigative team at CNN, was assigned to the elections beat in March as senior editor for campaign coverage.
CBS News
Caitlin Conant, former communications director for Marco Rubio’s presidential run in 2016 and most recently executive director for communications at CBS News, was named political director in March.
Ed O’Keefe, who was on the Congressional team at the Washington Post, joined the CBS Washington bureau as national political correspondent earlier this year.
Associated Press
Elana Schor, former Senate reporter at Politico, joined the Associated Press in December to cover the election as a national political reporter this month.
Juana Summers joined in September as a political reporter, after covering politics for CNN Politics Digital.
