CNN announced today that John Avlon, previously editor-in-chief and managing director of The Daily Beast, will join CNN as a full-time senior political analyst and as an anchor based in New York. Avlon will provide political commentary on CNN’s morning program “New Day,” along with original reporting and commentary for CNN Digital.
Avlon has been a CNN contributor since 2010, winning the National Society of Newspaper Columnist’s award for best online column in 2012.
Avlon joined The Daily Beast as a columnist in November 2008, one month after its launch. He rose through the ranks as political editor, executive editor, and managing director until he was named editor-in-chief in 2013. Prior to joining The Daily Beast, Avlon served as a columnist and associate editor for The New York Sun.
Avlon is a graduate of Yale University and has an MBA from Columbia University. He is married to Margaret Hoover, a fellow CNN political contributor, the new host of the public affairs program “Firing Line” on WNET-T, and author of American Individualism.
John Avlon begins his new full-time roles at CNN on June 25.
