In its long, winding story with media, Facebook Inc. has started another chapter, launching a subscription newsletter called Bulletin which gives its writers the power to create free and paid newsletters.
In a live audio room discussing Bulletin’s launch Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that Bulletin will be “focused on empowering independent writers, helping them reach new audiences and power their businesses.” The writers are handpicked and will not pay a fee to Facebook at launch.
The writers for Bulletin include former CNN Chief White House Correspondent Jessica Yellin, Dr. Raven Baxter, who was recognized in Fortune’s “40 under 40 in Health” last year, and former ABC News and Good Morning America Reporter Ronald Claiborne.
The featuring of Yellin is interesting, as Peter Kafka reported Bulletin would steer away from politics, since Substack has that covered. Facebook has been in the process of dialing back the amount of political content in its user’s feeds.
Bulletin is the latest in the growing trend of newsletter products. High-level journalists have left their newsrooms and joined the likes of Substack and other newsletter services. Recently, Twitter acquired a newsletter platform called Revue, which makes it free and easy for anyone to start and publish an editorial newsletter.
