Nels Nordquist recently started at the National Economic Council as special assistant to the president and senior director for international economic policy. Previously, Nordquist was a foreign service officer at the State Department. He graduated with a degree from Stanford University.
The new senior director also has special ties to current World Bank Executive Director Jennifer “D.J.” Nordquist, who was confirmed to a two-year term beginning on Sept. 21, 2019. Both Stanford graduates, the pair got married while D.J. was serving as press secretary to former Representative William M. Thomas (R-California), and Nels was starting at the State Department.
The National Economic Council’s main purpose is to advise the president on U.S. and global economic policy. A presidential archive lists four principal functions of the NEC: to coordinate policy-making for domestic and international economic issues; to coordinate economic policy advice for the president; to ensure that policy decisions and programs are consistent with the president’s economic goals; and to monitor implementation of the president’s economic policy agenda.
