Mark Gorak

There is a new deputy director at the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC). Retired Army Colonel Mark Gorak joined the Pentagon’s AI hub in April after a stint as director of people analytics with the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. He replaces former Acting Deputy Director Jacqueline Tame

Gorak’s previous military assignments include Joint Staff division chief and senior financial/data analyst for the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s Cost Assessment Program Evaluation.

In his new role as deputy director, Gorak serves as the senior advisor to JAIC Director Lt. Gen. Michael Groen and helps lead JAIC’s mission to deliver artificial intelligence capabilities to the Department of Defense.

As a part of this effort, JAIC recently released a Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO) announcement in collaboration with ACC Rock Island to solicit innovative commercial technology solutions. Proposals are due by 10/26/21.

A CSO is a competitive procurement method for acquiring emerging commercial technologies that allows the Department of Defense to field and select proposals based on individual merits rather than on a comparative basis. First launched in 2016, CSOs are aimed at streamlining and fast-tracking the procurement process to make collaboration easier with institutions that don’t traditionally do business with the government.
