On Nov. 7, Attorney General Jeff Sessions submitted his resignation at the request of President Donald Trump, who announced that Matthew G. Whitaker, the Department of Justice’s chief of staff, will be the acting attorney general.

Before joining the DOJ, Whitaker served as the U.S. attorney for the southern district of Iowa from 2004 to 2009. In 2014, he ran for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate but lost the primary against Joni Ernst. Before his political career, Whitaker received his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa in 1991 and an MBA and a law degree from the college in 1995.
President Trump said that he will announce his nominee to replace Sessions “at a later date.”
