Leading with Purpose: Through Politics and Impact

This week, we spoke to Christina Ware, Staff Assistant for the Office of Representative Colin Allred.

Can you tell me about your career path that you’ve taken that’s led you to where you are now?

Being a first-generation college graduate comes with challenges as there is no roadmap for what happens after graduation. In many ways, my early career has been hallmarked by exploration. After graduating from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and my certification to teach Middle School Mathematics, I taught 7-9th grade math in Charlotte, North Carolina. While I enjoyed my time in education and the relationships I built with students, I was forced to operate within a system not properly resourced to support low-income students and household needs. This awareness led me to ascertain the cause through exploring politics and policy. During the summer of 2023, I was privileged to intern for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee in Houston, Texas. As her intern I staffed her at events, meeting key stakeholders in the Houston community. I also managed constituent services and completed a variety of administrative duties.

Afterward, I interned for Lowe’s Companies Government Affairs Team in partnership with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation in the Fall of 2023. This was a pivotal experience, showcasing opportunities for careers that I did not know were possible. Because of my love for relationship building and policy, coupled with my constant desire to learn, I knew I found the right field. After completing my internship with Lowe’s I became a Staff Assistant for Congressman Colin Allred. My experience thus far has allowed me to work on legislation, help with our office mail system, and maintain order in this exciting environment.

Which specific policy areas or legislative issues are you most passionate about, and how do you stay informed and engaged in those areas?

My primary interests lie in housing, veterans’ affairs issues, and business and labor regulations. Under housing, I am most interested in learning how we can use modular housing to help solve the housing crisis, specifically for veterans and low-income individuals. During my time at Lowe’s, I gained an affinity for labor and business regulation as I saw the impact these rules can have not only on businesses but also on the people that rely upon these businesses.

Reading agency news and publications helps me stay informed on my particular areas of interest. I also follow news sources such as Bloomberg and Politico which keep me updated with news and important events occurring throughout the day.

What advice can you give to individuals aspiring to work on Capitol Hill stand out?

I have heard this question asked quite a bit and would love to share a piece of advice given to me by various mentors- be helpful. I think this advice is pertinent to the success of any Capitol Hill staffer as being helpful gives you opportunities to showcase your skill set and is the foundation for building positive working relationships. I would add that being helpful is only as good as being reliable. Reliability means your coworkers can count on you to deliver well when necessary. Another piece of advice I would personally give is to never get comfortable.

Capitol Hill is constantly evolving and being willing to learn and sharpen your skills goes a long way.

What do you believe sets Capitol Hill apart as a unique work environment, and how do you navigate its challenges in your everyday work?

Capitol Hill is alluring for many young staffers seeking to build an influential career. That said, a staffer’s workday does not end when you leave the office. To the reception you attend or the organization you assist, all can impact your career and reflect upon your workplace which can sometimes lead to social fatigue. To navigate the various “pulls” of operating in this environment, I recommend finding friends that allow you to “let your hair down.” Having a community of peers and mentors who share my values and remind me of the value I possess outside of my career is something that I am extremely grateful for and has given me the extra push to continue when things get challenging in the workplace.

Word association, what is the first word that comes to mind for each of these?
