George Callas, previously senior tax counsel to House Speaker Paul Ryan, joined Steptoe & Johnson LLP as a managing director in the firm’s Government Affairs & Public Policy and Tax Groups, based in Washington, D.C.
In his prior role as senior tax counsel, Callas served as the lead staff negotiator for House Republicans and was one of the primary architects of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Before that, Callas spent seven years on the House Committee on Ways and Means, including as chief tax counsel.
Prior to spending 15 years on Capitol Hill, Callas worked at KPMG as a senior tax associate, a position he received shortly after graduating from the University of Florida’s Fredric G. Levin College of Law with an LLM in Taxation.
