Joe Biden announced his 2020 presidential bid on April 25 with a video focusing on the appalling Charlottesville riots that rattled the nation in August 2017. In the clip, Biden also emphasized the battle for a just and welcoming America as key to his ideology, and took a firmly anti-Trump stance.
The first day of Biden’s presidential run also brought news that Symone Sanders, a political strategist who worked on Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign, has been hired as a senior advisor for Biden’s 2020 campaign. She is a strategist and communications consultant who, in addition to serving as a CNN political commentator, has also appeared on NPR, Fox News, MSNBC, NBC, BET and TV One.
This morning, Sanders tweeted in response to a video of Biden’s past statements, stating:
I think we all agree that the policy stances Biden has held in the last 10 years while the VP for Obama probably tells us a lot more about who he is now and how he would govern than something he said in the early 90s.
Sanders broke into the world of politics early – at age 16 she impressed former President Bill Clinton through a speech introducing him at a luncheon in Nebraska. Clinton later mentioned Sanders in his book, “Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World.”
Sanders graduated from Creighton University in 2013 and soon after began communications work with Chuck Hassebrook’s campaign for governor of Nebraska. She later brought her extensive skill set to the Virginia House of Delegates and the Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch, eventually taking on the role of National Press Secretary (the youngest ever to hold that role) of Sanders’ 2016 campaign.
Sanders is passionately feminist and a fervent advocate for juvenile justice reform. She previously fought for the rights of young people in the juvenile justice system as the chairwoman of the Coalition of Juvenile Justice Emerging Leaders Committee and a member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice. Several media outlets, such as The New York Times and ABC News have emphasized the young and diverse voice that Sanders will add to Biden’s campaign.
